Sweden: new public transport agreement approved for Stockholm
A new local and regional public transport agreement has been signed in Stockholm which provides for the construction of two new underground lines, the expansion of an existing tram line and the extension of a section of the northern urban train line, for a total cost of 30 billion kroner (around 3 billion euros), 63% of which will be paid by the Swedish Government. The agreement was signed between the Government Transport and Infrastructure Committee, the Municipality of Stockholm and the surrounding municipalities of Huddinge, Vallentuna, Osterker, Taby and Solna, which have undergone an intensive urbanisation process in recent years.
The agreement also provides for the construction of 100,000 new dwellings by 2035, most of them located close to the new infrastructure, to meet the growing demand for housing. Furthermore, 477 million kroner (around 50 million euros) will be earmarked for the construction of 30 cycle paths planned around the capital, with the aim of also connecting the harder to reach areas and promoting the use of bicycles.
