International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

On the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, Italy reaffirms its international commitment to fight any form of discrimination, including the one based on sexual orientation.

Italy’s actions to protect and promote human rights in the world are based on the deep conviction that human rights are universal.

Italy supports and promotes international initiatives to protect and promote the rights of the LGBTI community, also in coordination with its European Union Partners. It also recognises the important role played by civil society organisations in this area.

At UN level, in December 2008 Italy supported the first UN General Assembly Declaration on “human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity”. In 2015, our Country adhered to the UN Report on Good Practices on the matter, urging all Member States to adopt tangible measures against violence and discrimination. In June 2016, the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council passed a resolution to establish the first Independent United Nations Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. At EU level, Italy supports the implementation of the guidelines to protect and promote the enjoyment of all human rights by LGBTI persons.

Italy is a member of the “Equal Rights Coalition”, the interregional coalition for the promotion of the human rights of LGBTI persons, which was founded in July 2016 and which comprises approximately thirty member Countries.
