Italian Economic Diplomacy 22 November: breaking news from the world

UN: CARPI-BASED CMB TO RESTORE THE PALAIS DES NATION IN GENEVA THANKS TO A 245 MILLION EURO CONTRACT CMB

Cooperativa Muratori e Braccianti of Carpi, in the capacity of group leader of the joint-venture with CSC Impresa Costruzioni SA – of the Salini Impregilo Group – and Italiana Costruzioni S.p.A., has signed a contract to refurbish the historical Palais des Nations in Geneva which dates back to the ‘30s. The contract is worth approximately 270 million Swiss Francs (about 245 million euros).

The signing of the contract closed the “preconstruction” phase ahead of the actual opening of the restructuring works in March 2020 which are forecast to last approximately three years. The target is to complete the refurbishing works in the summer of 2023.

The joint venture will open an office in Geneva, thus marking the entry of a qualified group of Italian companies in the dynamic local market in the restructuring of the buildings of International Organizations.

The contract was signed only a few days after the opening of the new iconic “Room XIX” of the Palais des Nations, which was restructured according to the strongly innovative functional and aesthetic design criteria of Giampiero Peia, one of the most renowned contemporary Italian architects, and carried out by an Italian company.

In renewing the large compound of buildings that make up the “Palais des Nations” – with a surface area of more than 100,000 square metres on a plot of 46 hectares – the contractor aims to make a synthesis between functionality, sustainability, innovation and the protection of the historical image of the building, which was built in the 1930s by a group of international architects, including Italian architect Carlo Broggi, to host the seat of the Society of Nations.

In this perspective, the solid experience of Italian contractors in the restructuring of historically and architecturally prestigious buildings was judged to be an asset. Among other things, CMB also carried out the restoration and enlargement of the Opera del Duomo Museum (Cathedral Workshop) of Florence.
