NORWAY – VARD WINS CONTRACT FOR BUILDING A SUBMARINE CABLE-LAYING SHIP
Shipbuilding company VARD, a subsidiary of Fincantieri, has been awarded a contract to build a submarine cable-laying vessel by Dutch company Van Oord.
The contract provides for the delivery, within 2023, of a new-generation vessel capable of using cutting-edge environmental sustainability technology in order to minimise the pollution footprint and the related drastic reduction of CO2, NOx (nitrogen oxides and dioxides) and SOx (sulphur oxides) emissions.
The ship will be 130 meters long by 28 meters wide and will fly the Dutch flag.
It will be used mainly to transport, lay and commission the submarine cables required for the construction and operation of offshore wind farms, also in view of the significant interests acquired in this sector by the client Van Oord, which last October became a shareholder of the company Saare Wind Energy.
The vessel’s operating system is also particularly advanced and will have innovative features thanks to its increased cable carrying capacity (up to 8,000 tons) and to the presence of two cable carousel systems. The ship will also be able to directly install high voltage cables and to prepare from on board the trenches into which the pipes containing the electrical cables are laid.
