BAHRAIN – SEEKING INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS FOR THE COUNTRY’S FIRST-EVER METRO SYSTEM
Bahrain has launched a tender process for selecting international partners to build the country’s metro system. The multi-million-dinar project aims to develop a rail network in the Kingdom based on a PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model. To this end, the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications (MTT) will host a “Global Market Virtual Sounding Forum” to present the project to the major stakeholders in the worldwide construction sector. The Forum is scheduled to be held on 2 March 2021 and will be followed, over the forthcoming months, by the publication of a specific call for tenders. The MTT has appointed a technical, financial and legal team headed by KMPG, which will act as guide and consultant for the transactions.
The project will consist in the phased development and construction of an urban rail network 109 kilometres long with 4 lines. In phase one of the project the first two lines will be built, linking important facilities in the Kingdom, such as the International Airport and the principal residential, retail and institutional centres.
