Italy joins the School Meals Coalition, an initiative launched in 2021 by France and Finland with the aim to offer every child in the world daily access to a school meal by 2030.
Italy’s adhesion was made official in a letter signed by Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, addressed to his counterparts in France and Finland. The content of the letter was made public on the occasion of the First Global Meeting of the Coalition, recently concluded in Paris, which was attended by the Ambassador of Italy to France.
As the Minister pointed out in his letter, food security is one of the main global challenges to be addressed by the international community. It is no coincidence that it is one of the key topics to be covered during the Italian G7 Presidency in 2024. School canteens are a fundamental tool to encourage and strengthen access to food education for all children, starting with those living in the most remote and vulnerable areas of the planet and in situations of conflict or humanitarian emergency.
Joining the School Meals Coalition further strengthens Italy’s global efforts to ensure equitable access to food, fight malnutrition, promote sustainable food systems and foster virtuous partnerships through the involvement of the Italian agri-food chain.
