The Foreign Ministry’s reform comes into force today, January 1, 2026.
Strongly supported by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, it is inspired by the principles of simplification and innovation, with a renewed focus on services for citizens and companies, thus ensuring that the country’s growth is increasingly at the centre.
With this reform, the Ministry will have two souls – a political and an economic one – referring to two Deputy Secretaries General. A new Directorate for Growth and Export Promotion will be established alongside the Directorate for Political Affairs and International Security. These will also be matched by a new Directorate for Cybersecurity, meeting the need to address growing cyber threats, and a strengthening of the Directorate for Services to Citizens Abroad and Migration Policies.
A Simplification and Coordination Unit will also be established within the Secretariat General, tasked with gathering suggestions and submitting new proposals to streamline and simplify services for citizens and companies.
The reform will also address the diplomatic competitive examination and the training of all Foreign Ministry’s staff. By opening to all Master’s Degree programs, the Foreign Ministry aims to broaden its recruitment base and attract the best talent through a hiring expansion that has already begun in recent years.
