Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi had a telephone conversation today with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu that focused mainly on developments in Syria.
The two ministers agreed on the need for the international community to increase pressure on the Syrian regime, in view of the imminent adoption of a new Arab League action plan.
In particular, they reasserted their shared determination to work with the Arab League and other regional actors, while simultaneously maintaining an open channel of dialogue with the Syrian opposition.
Minister Terzi also took the opportunity to reassure his Turkish counterpart of Italy’s intention to continue to press in the European Union for the launch of a process leading to the gradual abolition of visas for Turkish citizens making short-term visits to Italy, recalling his having already broached the matter with European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle.
