Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi had a telephone conversation this morning with his Turkish colleague, Ahmet Davutoglu, on developments in the situation in Syria. He underscored the need, in seeking a solution to the crisis, to maintain the leading role played by the Arab League and to focus on the regional dimension. Minister Terzi also reiterated Italy’s utmost commitment to ensure that the international community, and most notably the European Union and the United Nations, steps up the pressure on the Syrian authorites to open a political process.
The head of Italian diplomacy noted Italy’s direct interest in the security of the region, where the role and commitment of our country were recently confirmed by the appointment of Paolo Serra, an Italian, as commander of the UN forces in Lebanon.
Terzi and Davutoglu agreed to keep in close touch to follow developments in Syria.
