Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi received his Sudanese colleague, Ali Ahmed Karti, at the Foreign Ministry in Rome today, 18 May 2012

Minister Terzi expressed Italy’s concern over the current state of tension between Sudan and South Sudan, and our expectation that the two sides should resume bilateral talks as soon as possible to resolve all questions still outstanding.

In expressing his appreciation of the moderate line taken by Minister Karti himself, Terzi insisted on the need for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2046 to be implemented in full. He also pressed for African Union mediation to be encouraged, in a constructive spirit.

The Italian Foreign Minister underscored that Italy, including in the context of European Union initiatives, will continue to play an active role in promoting regional stability. In this respect, the meeting provided an opportunity for Minister Terzi and Minister Karti to exchange views on the situation in Somalia.

During their discussion, Minister Terzi raised the issue of the two Italian marines detained in India. He firmly reiterated the Italian position and asked for Sudan’s support in international fora. On this, he obtained full understanding from his Sudanese colleague.

Lastly, Minister Terzi stressed Italy’s intention to revitalise bilateral economic cooperation and to continue our Development Cooperation activity in the health, basic education, urban development, food security and demining sectors.
