Press release detail

Within the context of the humanitarian projects promoted by Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi, two female Iranian refugees from Camp Ashraf arrive in Italy today from Camp Ashraf in Iraq. The operation, which is a response to a UN appeal for a shared solution to Camp Ashraf that respects human rights, is being sponsored by the foreign ministry in conjunction with the interior ministry and in collaboration with the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

“By this concrete gesture”, Terzi underscored, “we intend to make a humanitarian contribution in keeping with the Iraqi government’s right to sovereignty and in respect for the human rights of the refugees themselves. “These are principles”, Minister Terzi asserted, “that will continue to inspire us”.

One of the two women, who is seriously ill, will be treated in Italy thanks to the support of the Marche Region, which has enrolled her in a humanitarian aid programme for persons affected by conflict situations.

The Embassy of Italy in Bahgdad has already activated further contacts with the Iraqi authorities and with local UNHCR staff aimed at ascertaining the possibility of bringing other refugees from the Ashraf Camp to Italy soon.
