“Prof. Missiroli’s election as Director of the European Union’s Institute for Security Studies is an important recognition for Italy. It rewards our country’s engagement in the debate on the future of European defence and testifies to the sound, authoritative nature of our candidacy”. These were Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi’s comments on today’s election in Brussels that saw Professor Missiroli appointed head of the prestigious EU agency, with 22 votes in favour and 5 abstentions.
Established in 2001, the Institute carries out research in the Foreign Policy and Common Security fields and helps promote the debate on strategic issues within the European Union.
“Today’s result is the crowning touch on our work, which began in March, in support of this candidacy”, continued Terzi. He also expressed his “great satisfaction for a success in which an important part was played by the broad-ranging and effective work carried out in Brussels by our Permanent Representation and by our embassies in EU capitals”.
As officials at the Farnesina have underscored, “Prof. Missiroli’s election as head of the Institute strengthens and enhances the high profile maintained by Italy in all Community fora to ensure that the European Security Strategy is brought up-to-date in an effective and agreed manner”.
