“We welcome and support a resolution that reflects the Italian Government’s positions”. The comment was made by Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi, with reference to the Resolution on Syria approved by the European People’s Party (EPP) Congress in Bucharest this morning.

“Italy’s efforts”, underscored Terzi, “have always been to achieve the same objectives as those set out in the EEP Resolution. Starting with the cessation of violence and the unification of the opposition, indispensable conditions if a democratic political transition is to be opened to restore Syria to the Syrian people”

“I fully agree with the emphasis placed by the Resolution on the humanitarian dimension of the crisis. This is becoming extremely urgent, both for Syrians inside the country and for neighbouring countries. For this reason”, concluded the Foreign Minister, “my French colleague Fabius and I have urged the European Union to continue in, and strengthen, its central role. Both to find a solution to the Syrian crisis and for the post-Assad transition”.
