As a result of security concerns the Italian government temporarily suspended the activities of its Consulate General in Benghazi, whose staff are to re-enter Italy in the coming hours.
With regard to this decision, the Italian government has been in continuous contact with the Libyan government, to which it has confirmed support for the democracy and institution-building being conducted by the Libyan authorities.
Attempts at destabilisation such as Saturday’s terrorist attack on Italian Consul General Guido De Sanctis are further proof of the international community’s need to intensify support for the Libyan people and institutions.
