Iraq: Bonino, EU and UN must urge Baghdad government to seek a solution to the refugee situation

“It is essential that the European Union and United Nations hasten to step up their efforts at urging the Iraqi government to seek an adequate solution to the dramatic situation of the refugees: the serious episode at Camp Liberty is proof that this is a priority that can no longer be deferred”.

The statement came from the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Emma Bonino, who commented on the violent attack against Camp Liberty over the weekend, which she called “an act of violence for which there is no justification and that Italy firmly condemns”.

Asserting that she was “deeply saddened at the loss of innocent human lives, and close to the families of the victims”, Emma Bonino underscored the expectation that the Iraqi government will “do everything possible to ensure the safety of the residents of Camp Liberty as well as improve their living conditions, while at the same time encouraging other countries to offer refuge”.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs”, Minister Bonino concluded, “will continue to work in close concert with the Interior Ministry to pursue Italy’s policy of welcoming those Iranians who have in the meantime been able to join the refugees sheltered at Camp Ashraf”.
