Bonino cites deep satisfaction that the first ratification approved by the new legislature’s Lower House is of the Istanbul Convention

“It is cause for deep satisfaction that the first ratification approved by the new legislature’s Lower House is of the Istanbul Convention”, was the comment by Minister for Foreign Affairs Emma Bonino, according to whom “this concerted and unified commitment by all the political forces is highly significant as a sign of the ever-increasing assertion of the rights of women in the society. The priority now”, she added, “is to raise our partners’ awareness that they must also be swift in ratifying the Convention and putting it into effect”.

“The Istanbul Convention”, Minister Bonino pointed out, “sets obligations for the modification of our legislation on highly complex matters, and I intend to monitor its implementation in close concert with the other ministries concerned and the parliament. We must be the first”, she underscored, “to implement the “three Ps” of Istanbul at home: to Prevent violence, Protect victims and Punish the guilty”.

“Today’s important outcome”, Emma Bonino concluded, “encourages me to pursue, at every level, the historic campaign promoted by Italy for the assertion of the rights of women around the world, which I intend to maintain a central focus of our country’s international agenda”.
