Minister Emma Bonino met today at the foreign ministry in Rome with UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide Adama Dieng of Senegal.
Dieng, also in charge at the United Nations of the important “Responsibility to Protect” dossier, spoke of the process of adaptation currently under way within the United Nations of the mechanism for early warning of the existence of mass atrocities and crimes against humanity. Minister Bonino underscored that in the presence of such acts, and in the absence of government resolve or incapacity to determine responsibility, recourse had to be made to the International Criminal Court.
Minister Bonino also expressed satisfaction for her guest’s special attention to sectarian violence, which in some parts of the world is threatening the survival of entire communities and religious groups, and agreed with Dieng that the causes behind waves of refugees needed greater attention.
Finally, Dieng expressed his gratitude for the Italian government’s collaboration with his institution, which has led to various initiatives focused on education and support for the institutions and civil societies of countries at risk, such as Syria.
