Egypt, Bonino firmly condemns escalation of violence. “Extremely urgent that Egyptian political forces meet to seriously discuss national reconciliation”

“I wish to express my firmest condemnation of those responsible for the escalation of the violence in Egypt. The news of dozens of victims is confirmation – if that were necessary – of the extreme urgency that all political forces meet to discuss national reconciliation”, was Minister for Foreign Affairs Emma Bonino’s comment today.

The minister reiterated that the clashes not only do not help to achieve peace, but that they cannot but lead to tragic results and to further aggravating existing divisions. She then appealed to Egyptian leaders’ sense of responsibility, urging them to prevent the country from spiralling into armed conflict.

“There are no short cuts or alternatives to serious political negotiations inclusive of all the political representatives whom the leaders have allowed freedom of movement and expressions”, she added.

“Italy is ready and willing to intervene at humanitarian level should that become necessary”, Bonino concluded.
