Italy sustains the International Red Cross and Red Crescent appeal calling for humanitarian access to Syria and the defence of all volunteers. It is necessary “that all parties to the conflict respect the basic principles of the Geneva Convention and international law”, foreign minister Federica said, “beginning with the protection of healthcare workers”.
The Red Crescent, Mogherini pointed out, “has paid a heavy and unacceptable price, with the killing of dozens of volunteers, for an effort to aid and support the civilians involved in the conflict that has always been impartial and independent”. The minister, on the other hand, insisted on the assurance of “access to the suffering population to distribute aid and treat the wounded, in addition to the creation of humanitarian corridors”.
