Iraq: Let’s hope vote of confidence marks turning point, says Mogherini

Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini has assured Premier Haider al-Abadi and the new government, which today obtained the confidence of the Iraqi Parliament, of Italy’s support. “After months of clashes and political instability, Iraq seems at last to have embarked on a new path. Let’s hope now that the vote of confidence in Haider al-Abadi’s government, in which all the communities of the country are represented, marks a turning point”, said Mogherini.

“Italy stands by the Iraqi people and will go on supporting both the national reconciliation process now entrusted to al-Abadi and the efforts to combat ISIS. And we will go on providing help, in the form of humanitarian intervention, for the populations involved in the conflict. This is a commitment we have undertaken along with many other countries, a commitment that we hope will support the Iraqi government and people in their desire for peace and stability”, added Minister Mogherini.
