Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini is in Tripoli to attend the opening of the second session of political dialogue in Libya under the aegis of the United Nations. She is attending along with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. The dialogue opened on 29 September in Ghadames, at the initiative of the special representative and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Bernardino Leon.
The situation in Libya is one of great instability in a highly complex overall framework but the presence of the international community at the highest level is intended to spur and support dialogue on all sides. Leon’s initiative brings the parties together at the same table for the first time in Tripoli.
The road forward is still uphill, but it is the only one that can give Libya a peaceful future and prevent the disintegration of the country.
