“The General National Congress’s decision to take part in the dialogue sponsored by the United Nations is a step in the right direction”. This was the comment by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Paolo Gentiloni, on the statements made by Tripoli following the latest talks with Bernardino Leon. Leon is the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Libya.
“We strongly encourage all parties, and especially the Congress, to grasp this opportunity in a constructive spirit of reconciliation. An opportunity that Italy has firmly supported, during a period marked by a serious economic, social and security crisis with increasingly severe effects for the population”, continued Gentiloni.
“It is vital to reach a ceasefire that will at last be observed throughout the country to build a favourable environment for dialogue and respond to the appeal for reason and a better future, as emerged in Geneva”, concluded the Minister.
