Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni met with Foreign Minister of Algeria Abdelkader Messahel at the Farnesina today to discuss the situation in Libya.
Ministers Gentiloni and Messahel confirmed their determined commitment on behalf of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Libya, along with their full support for the process of political dialogue being led by UN Secretary General Special Envoy Bernardino Leon and for UNSMIL efforts toward the formation of a national unity government dedicated to the country’s stabilisation and reconstruction.
Reiterating their determination to combat international terrorism in Libya and throughout the region, the ministers strongly condemned the attack in Tunis, and expressed their condolences for its victims and concern over this attempt at destabilising the country at this stage of its democratisation.
A scheduled trilateral meeting that was to include Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Hassan Shoukry was postponed to next week as a result of an unexpected change of plans that obliged Minister Shoukry to remain in Egypt alongside President Al Sisi.
