Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni received Libyan foreign minister Mohamed al-Dairy in Rome, to whom he underscored Italy’s strong support for the political dialogue facilitated by Special UN Envoy Bernardino Leon as “the only possible solution to the crisis”. “I underscored the importance to Minister al-Dairy of the Tobruk delegation’s participation next week in the Morocco meeting, and that it has a strong mandate, adequate composition and is fully active”, asserted Gentiloni.
“Divisions”, the minister continued, “and mistrust among the principal actors work to the advantage of terrorist groups such as Daesh who seek to strengthen their presence in Libya”.
“A ceasefire that everyone respects is a critical prerequisite for the success of this dialogue. Italy is ready to support a national unity government”, Gentiloni concluded, “by playing a front-line role in monitoring the ceasefire, both on the request of the same Libyan authorities and in a multilateral legal framework”.
