“The Farnesina has noted with concern the failure to adopt a final document at the five-yearly Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which has just ended in New York. The failure was caused by the diverging views of the States Party, especially on the preparation of a conference on the creation of a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).
Italy continues to place the utmost importance on strengthening the NPT as a cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation system. It is an essential basis for the pursuit of nuclear disarmament and the further development of peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
The process of achieving a world free of nuclear weapons, which Italy continues to promote, both through its own initiatives and in agreement with our principal allies and partners, continues”.
