Joint Statement on Libya by the Ambassadors and Special Envoys to Libya of the EU, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States

Tunis, 24 October 2015

“The Ambassadors and Envoys of the countries listed below strongly condemn the October 23 terrorist attack in Benghazi, which targeted a peaceful demonstration and resulted in a number of deaths and injuries.  Benghazi is critical to Libya’s overall stability, and the latest attack underscores the urgent need to bring peace to Libya now.

The Ambassadors and Envoys underline the need for parties to the UN-facilitated political dialogue to conclude a political agreement now.  Libya needs a Government of National Accord that can represent and protect all Libyans.  They stress that there is no military solution to the current crisis in Libya.

The Ambassadors and Envoys call on all Libyans to set aside their differences and engage in dialogue to resolve their political differences and begin the hard work of returning Libya to a state of peace, stability, and prosperity.  They emphasize that only through unity can terrorism be confronted and violence brought to an end.

Ambassadors and Special Envoys to Libya of the EU, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.”
