Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni received a telephone call today from Turkish foreign minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu following the events that led to the downing of the Russian SU-24 aircraft.
Pointing out Turkey’s crucial role in regional stability and within the common framework of the Atlantic Alliance, Gentiloni underscored the importance of Turkey and Russia’s pursuance of bilateral dialogue with a view to avoiding the repetition of similar episodes and to preventing all forms of escalation. The minister expressed his hope in the continued efforts of all parties to arrive at a solution to the Syrian crisis.
Finally, the two ministers compared their positions ahead of the summit of 28 heads of state and government of the European Union and Turkey to be held in Brussels on Sunday.
