If confirmed, this morning’s nuclear test by North Korea would represent a serious violation of international law and pertinent United Nations Security Council resolutions, as well as being a serious threat to international and regional peace and security.
In condemning this violation, Italy’s Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni has asked North Korea to comply with its international obligations.
In the coming hours, Minister Gentiloni will discuss the international community’s necessary reactions to this provocation with Fumio Kishida, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, which is the country currently chairing the G7. The UN Security Council is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting today.
