“I congratulate the Council; it is a crucial step even if the situation remains delicate. Now it is essential for the Chamber of Representatives in Tobruk to hastily approve the list of cabinet members,” said Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni, when expressing Italy’s support for Libya’s Government of National Accord, which was announced today by the President of Libya’s Presidential Council, Fayez al-Sarraj.
“We have before us a real opportunity to stabilise the Country, which must be grasped by everyone. Italy is ready to do its share to support Libya,” added Mr Gentiloni, after a meeting at the Italian Foreign Ministry today with the UN Special Representative and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya, Martin Kobler. Mr Gentiloni and Mr Kobler agreed that the announcement of the list of cabinet ministers is a decisive step, to be considered by all Libyan parties as the start of a positive phase for the Country.
Today the Italian Foreign Ministry is also hosting a High-Level Ministerial Meeting on Libya, an operational follow up to the ministerial meeting held last December 13 in Rome, with the participation of the representatives of 18 countries, 3 international organisations and a delegations of officials of the Presidential Council. The meeting will focus on the support to be given to Libyan institutions in the political, economic and humanitarian domain in order to guarantee the Country’s future development. Another point on the agenda are issues relative to security needs.
