Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Secretary General Michele Valensise summoned the U.S. Ambassador to Italy, John Phillips, to request clarifications over reports published in today’s papers, according to which American agencies were supposed to have tapped former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and some of his close associates in 2011.
While referencing the new measures for confidentiality of communications that U.S. President Obama adopted in 2014, U.S. Ambassador Phillips assured he will immediately take the issue to the attention of his authorities.
Secretary General Valensise reaffirmed that Italy sincerely expects in a very short time clarifications about the reports that have surfaced on the events that occurred in 2011.
