During his visit to Iraq, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Vincenzo Amendola, stopped in Erbil where he met the principal authorities of the Kurdistan Regional Government, including President Barzani, the Prime Minister and the Head of Foreign Affairs. He also met the Adviser for Security and discussed the situation in the region and, specifically, the fight against the threat from Daesh terrorists.
Amendola took stock of the excellent bilateral relations with the Kurdish authorities who thanked Italy for its crucial contribution to the training and equipping of local forces and its relentless commitment to the fight against Daesh.
Undersecretary Amendola also visited the Italian armed forces stationed in Erbil where they train peshmerga forces. Amendola thanked them for their crucial contribution to security and stability and for their tireless qualified work which have put the Iraqi and Kurdish security forces in a position to effectively counter the terrorist threat and restore peace and stability throughout the area.
Italy is expected to play an even more central role in the region due to the imminent start of maintenance work on the Mosul Dam, which is being carried out by the Italian Trevi company.
