Chapters 23 and 24 opened in Serbia’s EU accession negotiations

Today’s EU-Serbia intergovernmental conference in Brussels ratified the opening of negotiation chapters 23 and 24 on fundamental rights and justice, liberty and security.

“It is an important signal for Serbia and the Balkans which confirms that, even in a post-Brexit Europe, their perspective integration encourages the Country to follow through with the reform process that is crucial to modernizing the Country and to reinforcing the rule of law and the fight against corruption,” said Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

Italy supports the accession of Serbia and the Western Balkans in the EU and will work to increasingly involve Belgrade and the whole region in tangible actions to promote the area’s growth, stability and security in view of the Western Balkans Summit to be held in Italy in the summer of 2017.
