Albania: Undersecretary Amendola ended his mission in Tirana today

Today the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Vincenzo Amendola, ended his mission to Tirana, where he chaired the meeting of Italian Ambassadors accredited to the Countries of the Adriatic-Balkan area convened to prepare the Summit that the Italian Chair of the Berlin Process will preside in Trieste on 12 July 2017.

In the course of the day, Undersecretary Amendola met with the Country’s top-ranking institutional officials, including the President of the Republic, Bujar Nishani, Prime Minister, Edi Rama, and Foreign Minister, Ditmir Bushati.

The talks focused on Tirana’s European integration process and the Country’s commitment to pass the reforms promoted by the Government.

“Over the years, Albania has made tangible and very significant efforts to adopt effective political and economic reforms, with the main aim of pushing forward the European integration process that we firmly and persistently support,” said Mr Amendola. He added: “Indeed, Italy will continue to staunchly support Tirana’s European aspirations. The EU will not be complete without the Balkans and Albania is a crucial Country for the area.”

The institutional meetings also offered the opportunity to collect Albania’s judgments and expectations with respect to the Trieste Summit next July. Mr Amendola recalled that “Albania is a crucial player in the Western Balkans”. He went on: “During the past few years, the Country has made a substantial contribution to promoting dialogue within the region and to improving political and economic relations. It is essential that it continue playing a stabilising role throughout the region, which is now being swept by new tensions, confirming its role of promoter of good neighbourhood relations and regional cooperation, also in view of the Trieste Summit.”
