Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, receives his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed Al-Thani, at the Farnesina today

The rich agenda of the talks focused on the bilateral relations between the two countries, with special attention to the interests of Italian companies in Qatar and actions to attract Qatari investments in Italy. Moreover, Minister Alfano and Sheikh Al-Thani examined the current situation in Libya and Syria and discussed the state of the peace process in the Middle East. Minister Alfano informed Minister Al Thani on the main guidelines of Italy’s presence in the United Nations Security Council. Minister Alfano thanked his guest for a fruitful exchange of views on the major bilateral themes and international policy issues, and for the invitation extended to him by Minister Al-Thani to visit Qatar. “Such visits are unique opportunities to enhance our strategic partnership,” Alfano pointed out. “We wish to strengthen our bilateral cooperation on the main regional dossiers, in which Qatar continues to play a key-role,” said the minister and added: “We rely also on Qatar to overcome the current crisis, by promoting the easing of tensions and focusing efforts on defeating Daesh.” Finally Alfano expressed his appreciation for the decision made by Qatar to open a new consular office in Milan, ensuring  “the utmost cooperation from the Farnesina and the Diplomatic Protocol offices.”
