Bilateral meeting between Minister Alfano and the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Sergey V. Lavrov

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, met with the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, on the fringes of the G20 Meeting of Foreign Ministers under way in Bonn. The talks focused on the crises in the Mediterranean scenario, especially in Syria and Libya.

“Italy favourably welcomes the joint effort of Russia and Turkey on the Syrian dossier, to the extent that it will facilitate conditions favouring full compliance with the truce,” Minister Alfano said. The Italian Foreign Minister also recalled the importance of the Astana Conference in reactivating the political process in Geneva and added that Italy, as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and member of the International Syria Support Group, is ready to make a contribution towards a credible and sustainable political solution.

Shifting their attention to Libya, Ministers Alfano and Lavrov had an ample exchange of views on the political, security, economic and humanitarian situation in the Country. Mr Alfano recalled “Italy’s commitment towards a constructive and inclusive reconciliation process in Libya.” The talks also offered the opportunity to discuss the crisis in Ukraine as well as bilateral matters.
