The European Union’s new sanctions against individuals involved in the use of chemical weapons in Syria are a significant step towards ensuring that the people who use such weapons face up to their responsibilities. The use of chemical weapons, by anyone, is wholly unacceptable wherever it may occur and in any circumstances.
Working with its European and international partners, Italy will continue to pursue justice for the victims of these heinous attacks. The country will also engage with the firmest determination to prevent any further use of chemical weapons in Syria and anywhere else, in line with the traditional non-proliferation policy.
