The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, said: “The first Italian-Libyan Economic Forum will be held in Agrigento next 8 July.”
I chose Agrigento because of its strategic position across from Libya and in the Mediterranean. It will be a particularly important event in the perspective of outlining economic recovery scenarios in Libya.
Historically, Libya constitutes an exceptional partner for Italy, not only political and in terms of security, but also economic. The Italian Government is strongly committed in favour of the Country’s stabilisation and of re-establishing the required security conditions to relaunch all aspects of bilateral relations and especially cooperation in the area of the economy, infrastructure and energy.”
The Forum will be divided into four panels that will address the issue of the framework for investments, infrastructure, energy and financial instruments and networks.
The event – to be opened with remarks by Minister Alfano and Libyan Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed Maiteg – aims to explore the opportunities offered by Libya in these sectors by putting together, for the first time ever, the major players in the world of Italian business, finance and consulting and the top officials of the Libyan government.
The evening before the opening of the Forum, a Declaration of Intents will be signed against the evocative backdrop of the Valley of the Temples to reaffirm the special relations that exist between Italy and Libya and to outline a framework for economic cooperation in the hope of the Country’s progressive political stabilisation.
