Alfano to his Spanish counterpart Dastis: “Spain is an essential partner for Italy”

The Minister of foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, met this evening with his Spanish colleague, Alfonso Maria Dastis Quecedo, who was attending the 12th Conference of  Italian Ambassadors as guest of honour. The themes discussed during the talks were, among others, bilateral relations, the Brexit, the situation in Libya and the migration issue.”Spain is an essential economic and trade partner and I am pleased to remark that, following a difficult phase due to the global economic crisis, trade between our two countries has picked up strongly again in these past two years,” said Minister Alfano to his colleague. “We are in favour of relaunching a bilateral Summit in 2017 and look forward to the Forum of civil societies, which Rome will host on 2-3 October. It will be further proof of the vitality of the ties binding our Countries,” added Italy’s Foreign Affairs minister.”We must work at minimizing the negative effects the Brexit will have on the EU citizens, on our companies and on EU Public Administrations and Member Countries,” pointed out Alfano. With reference to the meeting in Paris between Al-Sarraj and Haftar, Minister Alfano said he was happy to learn that the UN will attend the meeting. “In this phase, I believe it is essential to give cohesive support to Ghassan Salame,” the minister underlined. “Relaunching the political process on an inclusive basis that also promotes national reconciliation, is key to achieving a greater stabilization of Libya also with a view to countering terrorism and the illegal trafficking of human beings. Any development that may occur in Libya or any initiative that might involve it, has an inevitable  impact on Italy and its security,” stressed Minister Alfano. As regards migration flows, the minister highlighted that Italy is fully shouldering its responsibilities and that it is now time for the European Union and the other Member States to show solidarity, also by  fully enforcing the decisions made on relocation.
