Alfano: “Italy, together with the European Union and the Countries supporting the United Nation’s International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG), expresses concern over the decision Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales made a few days ago, to declare persona non grata CICIG Commissioner, Ivan Velásquez.
Our country has been strongly committed to supporting CICIG and more generally cooperation programmes designed to fight corruption and organized crime in Central America. Italy wishes to reiterate its appreciation for the work Mr. Velasquez has carried out in these past few years in Guatemala to fight against impunity, with a view to consolidating legality and upholding the rule of law.
Fully aware that only a culture of legality can allow the Country to prosper, Italy hopes that the present institutional crisis, which followed the provision, can be overcome – in the general interest of the Country – by promoting dialogue between all the parties concerned.”
