“For Italy, Argentina has always been a special partner in Latin America. The fact that over 40% of the Argentinian population is of Italian descent has created a special relationship in all fields: from the political, to the economic (with 225 Italian companies operating in the Country), cultural and academic. The taking office of President Macri opened a new season of bilateral visits at very high level, which peaked with the visit to Argentina by President Mattarella.
At regional level, we share the same concerns for the situation in Venezuela, where the events that followed the establishment of a Constituent Assembly show that the Government has abandoned the road of moderation. Italy reaffirms its call for dialogue, immediate and in good faith, based on the four conditions laid down by the Holy See some time ago. At community level, Italy staunchly supports the closing of the EU-Mercosur Association Agreement, which is sure to create one of the largest free trade areas in the world, opening new development prospects for both sides.”
The statement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, referring to the conversation he had with his Argentinian counterpart, Jorge Marcelo Faurie, on the fringes of the 72nd UN General Assembly.
