Italy elected in the A Categoria of the Executive Council of the International Maritime Organization – IMO (London, 1 December 2017)

The Foreign Ministry expresses satisfaction for the re-election of Italy in the A Category of the Executive Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the 2018-2019 period in today’s 30th IMO General Assembly in London. The goal of the Organisation is to promote the development and safety of maritime transport.

“The re-election of Italy, a constant member of the Executive Council ever since the IMO was established in 1948, confirms the prestige that our Country enjoys in the maritime sectors and bears witness to the special contribution that Italy makes in the development and safety of navigation and in the protection of the marine environment,” affirmed the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano. “This compounds the primary role that Italy is acknowledged to have in providing rescue and assistance to migrants in the Mediterranean,” the Foreign Minister recalled.

The A Category of the Executive Council of the International Maritime Organisation includes the States that, by virtue of large merchant fleets, give the greatest impulse in developing maritime transport worldwide. Italy was elected with a very large consensus together with China, Japan, Panama, Greece, Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, Norway and United States.
