Angelino Alfano, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, travelled to Tripoli on 23 December to convey the Government’s greetings and wishes to all the men and women who, with their work on the frontline, every day testify to Italy’s presence and closeness to the Institutions and to the people of Libya. Minister Alfano highlighted that “the political investment made in opening the embassy in Libya revealed to be a great success”.
During his visit, the minister met with the Libyan Deputy Prime Minister, Ahmed Maitig, and with the Foreign Minister, Mohammed Taha Siyala, to explore bilateral partnership options and to bolster initiatives to provide assistance to Libyan Institutions already in the pipeline. “Italy staunchly supports the institutional framework with the Presidential Council and the Government of National Accord set out in the Skhirat Agreement, and urges the Libyan leadership to continue along the path of inclusive political dialogue,” Minister Alfano later told the Libyan Prime Minister, Fayez al-Sarraj.
