“To those who, like Matteo Salvini, instrumentally asks to take a stand against military intervention in Syria by the West, we would like to recall that Italy has always condemned the use of chemical weapons with utmost firmness: their use constitutes a crime of war and an extremely serious violation of international law. This said, the Italian Government stands by our Country’s traditional allies: United States, France and United Kingdom. If Salvini sees it otherwise, he should say it clearly,” said the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Vincenzo Amendola.
The Undersecretary went on: “On the part of Italy, we strongly reaffirm the need to verify the facts in a timely and independent investigation, subject to Russia’s possible veto on opening an inquiry within the UN Security Council. In any case, in the past, the joint OPAC-UN mechanism has already ascertained the responsibility of Assad’s regime in using chemical weapons against Syria’s civilian population.”
