The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Vincenzo Amendola, today met the Deputy Foreign Minister for Iranian Political Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Director General for Political and Security Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, Amendola, assisted by ambassador Luca Giansanti, discussed the crises in the region with the representative of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and in particular in Syria and Yemen. Undersecretary Amendola repeated the position of the Italian government on Syria, as stated yesterday by Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, and Foreign Minister, Angelino Alfano. He said that in supporting its historic allies, Italy is against an escalation of violence and strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons. Our country therefore hopes that all parties, including Syria’s President, Bashar al-Assad, seriously and fully commit to the UN-led process and supports the work of UN special envoy, Staffan de Mistura. Amendola and Araghchi agreed it was necessary to hold more discussions to resolve the main crises.
The meeting also covered the Iran nuclear deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The Undersecretary said Italy supports all aspects of the agreement and wants full implementation from all those involved. Amendola explained that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, as emphasised by the EU and the UN Secretary-General, is an agreement that is in the best interest of the international community and is crucial for security and stability in the region.
