The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Enzo Moavero Milanesi, together with Monsignor Richard Paul Gallagher, the Secretary for Relations with States of the Holy See, will open the 11th International Conference of the Ministers of Justice entitled “For a World Without the Death Penalty”, held today, 28 November, at the Chamber of Deputies.
The Conference convenes almost thirty ministers, especially from African and Asian Countries. The Conference is organised every year by the Comunità di Sant’Egidio with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and aims to encourage and support those Countries that have undertaken an institutional process to abolish capital punishment. Italy has long been spearheading the United Nations campaign for a universal moratorium on the death penalty, a priority in Italy’s foreign policy. The latest Resolution for a moratorium was approved by the General Assembly Third Committee meeting of last 13 November, with a number of votes in favour never recorded before.
