The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio expressed his sincere appreciation overr the agreement reached between the government of the Syrian Arab Republic and the Syrian Negotiations Commission regarding the establishment of the Syrian Constitutional Committee as announced today by UN Secretary-General Guterres. This is an important first step to launch the political process which could lead towards a solution to the crisis in Syria in accordance with Resolution 2254 (2015). The work of UN special envoy Pedersen made this result possible. Italy continues to support Pederson and Di Maio will meet him in the next few days in New York.
Finally, the Minister hopes that the Committee will start up work soon, facilitated by the United Nations in Geneva, and he is prepared to make a contribution.
