UN: Del Re affirms Italy’s full support for Sudan’s new government to the Prime Minister

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Emanuela Del Re, attended the High-Level Event on Sudan in New York, that was organised for the first time on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The event, co-chaired by the UN Secretary-General Guterres, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Faki and the Prime Minister of Sudan Hamdok, aims to affirm the International Community’s unity of intent in supporting the new Sudanese Government that was established at the beginning of September following the positive outcome of negotiations between the armed forces and civil society organisations.

The Deputy Minister began by expressing Italy’s congratulations for the formation of the new Government. She said: “After Bashir left the political stage, Italy forcefully called for the transition in Sudan to have an ‘African solution’, supporting the mediation of the African Union and of IGAD. The only way out of the crisis needed to come from the Sudanese people themselves and you have proved to the world that no one needs teach you the language of peace and responsibility.”

“Italy has always stood by Sudan and the Italian Cooperation service was extremely active in providing assistance to the Sudanese People,” she added. “Now, at this historic point in time, we need to do even more and we will! Sudan is too important for the African continent to fail.”

“Prime Minister Hamdok, you have our full support!” – Deputy Minister Del Re concluded.
