Syria: Turkish Ambassador in Italy summoned

On the recommendation of Minister Luigi Di Maio, Deputy Foreign Minister Marina Sereni met the Turkish Ambassador to Italy today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to inform him of Italy’s firm condemnation of Turkey’s unilateral military action in northeastern Syria.

Unilateral military action threatens the results achieved by the anti-Daesh coalition – which both Italy and Turkey belong to – and will prolong the instability in northeastern Syria with the risk of creating fertile ground for the return of Daesh.

The Deputy Minister therefore firmly reaffirmed Italy’s traditional position whereby settlement of the Syrian crisis can only be achieved on a stable, long-lasting basis through international diplomacy and political dialogue and not by military action. Italy therefore continues to give its full support to the work of the UN special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen.

Finally, the Deputy Minister expressed deep concern at the humanitarian consequences of the Turkish operation, emphasising that it was essential to protect the civil population.
