“Rome MED – Mediterranean Dialogues” Conference. Fifth edition

Fifth edition of the MED-Dialogues Conference promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and by ISPI The Fifth Edition of the Rome MED – Mediterranean Dialogues Conference, promoted since 2015 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and by ISPI will be held in Rome at the Hotel Parco dei Principi, via Gerolamo Frescobaldi 5, From 5 to 7 December 2019. The Conference will be held over a three-day period (for the preliminary program and accreditation see https://www.esteri.it/mae/it/sala_stampa/areagiornalisti/notestampa).

More than 40 leaders will participate in the MED Dialogues, including Presidents, Prime Ministers and Ministers and about 1000 entrepreneurs, academics, representatives of the major international organizations as well as scholars and experts from over 50 countries. Also this year there are over 40 sessions grouped into 4 pillars: “Shared security”, “Shared prosperity”, “Migration” and “Culture and civil society”.

 The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi DI MAIO, will open the conference on December 6th, while the conclusion is scheduled for Saturday, December 7th, with the contribution of the President of the Council of Ministers, Giuseppe CONTE.
 
Participants in the conference include Idriss Déby ITNO, President of the Republic of Chad, Joseph MUSCAT, Prime Minister of Malta, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim AL-THANI, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar and many Foreign Affairs Ministers, among whom: Sabri BOUKADOUM, Algeria; Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed AL-KHALIFA, Bahrain; Sameh SHOUKRY, Egypt; Ayman SAFADI, Jordan; Subrahmanyam JAISHANKAR, India; Mohammad Javadì ZARIF, Iran; Mohammed Ali AL-HAKIM, Iraq; Mohamed Taher SIALA, Libya; Carmelo ABELA, Malta; Riyad AL-MALKI, Palestine; Sergey LAVROV, Russia; Miroslav CERAR, Slovenia; Sabri BACHTOBJI, Tunisia; Mevlut ÇAVUŞOĞLU, Turkey; as well as Tawakkol KARMAN, Nobel Peace Prize, Yemen; Paolo GENTILONI, Commissioner for Economic Affairs, European Commission; Geir O. PEDERSEN, Special Envoy for Syria, United Nations; Ghassan SALAME ’, Special Representative of the Secretary General for Libya, United Nations, in addition to the President of the ISPI, Giampiero MASSOLO.

The aim of the MED Dialogues is to contribute to facing the challenges and opportunities posed by the “enlarged” Mediterranean, by focusing on the great opportunities that a positive agenda on development can offer. Among the strategic issues at the heart of the debate are: the main regional crises (with a focus on Libya and Syria); the challenges posed by the ongoing transition processes; the geopolitical competition between the various regional actors; terrorism and the fate of ISIS; the management of migration flows; the geopolitical impact of climate change; the new energy scenarios; and the role of investments and technological innovation in the region.

Ten preparatory meetings (Towards MED) have been organized in Doha, Geneva, Brussels, Rome, Abu Dhabi, Moscow, Beirut, Washington, New York and Riyadh to enrich the contribution of ideas and proposals. On December 5nine Forums will be held at Parco dei Principi on specific topics related to the enlarged Mediterranean.
