Del Re and Belloni present the Premio Minerva to women

The Sala della Protomoteca of the Campidoglio, hosted the 30th edition of the “Premio Minerva Anna Maria Mammolitti”, at which Deputy Foreign Minister Emanuela Del Re presented the “Premio alle Donne del Mondo per l’impegno Politico” (“Award to Women in the World for their Political Engagement”) to Fawziya Abikar Nur, the Minister of Health of Somalia.

Deputy Foreign Minister Del Re underscored the close ties between Fawziya Abikar Nur and Italy, as the Somalian minister studied in Rome and Bologna, and referred to the offices she held at the World Health Organization before taking office in the Federal Government of Somalia. “During my missions to Mogadishu, I acquired first-hand knowledge of the difficult context in which Fawziya Abikar Nur works with extraordinary ingenuity and professionalism in promoting the themes of shared development;” she said.

The award ceremony was attended by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Elisabetta Belloni, who presented the “Premio alle Donne del Mondo per i Diritti Umani e Civili” (“Award to the Women in the World for Human and Civil Rights”) to Vandana Shiva, a well-known Indian environmental activist who in 1991 founded Navdanya, the national movement for the protection of the diversity and integrity of biological resources.

Created by Anna Maria Mammoliti, the Minerva Award is assigned to women symbolically representing a female example through their professional skills and the positive values they uphold.

On the fringes of the award ceremony, Deputy Minister Del Re had a bilateral meeting with Minister Abikar Nur to illustrate the Italian initiative, at her own suggestion, to establish an International Day to Combat Diarrhoea in Children. The Somalian minister expressed her full support for the initiative that tackles a problem of great relevance for Somalia.
